Updates and Changes

Tianzifang is a unique urban landmark in Shanghai. The internal architecture features a mix of structures ranging from 19th-century water town cottages to 1920s Shikumen lane houses, and workshops and factories from the 1940s and 50s, exemplifying the intertwining of production and daily life in old Shanghai neighbourhoods. No. 7 Courtyard, originally a cup manufacturing workshop, is located at the intersection of the factory and the lane area, connecting two small alleys within.

Around the turn of the millennium, artists began to settle in Tianzifang, giving it its name. The artistic atmosphere combined with its labyrinthine complexity attracted visitors from all directions. During this period, the northwest wings of No. 7 Courtyard underwent renovations and expansions, transforming from original brick-and-wood structures to reinforced concrete commercial buildings.By 2020, due to the pandemic, approximately 40% of the shops in Tianzifang had closed, leading to a decline in the business environment. This situation provided us with an opportunity to undertake a comprehensive renovation of No. 7 Courtyard's façade and courtyard.

Shade and Open Space

At the centre of the No. 7 Courtyard stands a massive camphor tree, making this courtyard particularly special amid Tianzifang's dense streets. However, with the rapid turnover of shops in the past, various tenants continuously encroached upon public spaces; tree pits were expanded with added seating and barriers, effectively slicing the courtyard into narrow alleys where wandering tourists found no place to rest, and seated diners felt cramped.

The entrances to the courtyard are located at opposite corners, and a two-story building at the corner naturally attracts attention from both directions. In previous renovations, the owners had clearly recognised this spot by showcasing large murals on the building; however, this state merely served as a backdrop: the outdoor stairs were too steep and were routinely closed for safety reasons, while forgotten clutter filled a small room on the second floor that leaked rainwater.

When we climbed the stairs, another tranquil side of Tianzifang came into view—the enormous tree canopy was within reach, and old red tiles were undulated in waves. We felt that this was a space that could be utilised to add more dimensions for activities in the courtyard.

Eaves and Handrails

We renovated the old leaking roof of the two-story building, redesigning it into an asymmetrical form that raised one side to allow the red-tiled sloped roof of the old factory to become another layer of interface for indoor space, creating an intimate and nostalgic atmosphere. The other side was lowered to table height, providing a downward perspective that interacted with passersby in the alley.

On the ground floor, we preserved the original walls while detaching the structure of the new roof to ensure formal freedom. We aimed for this independence and lightness to also be reflected at the junction between the roof and wall piers. Therefore, we positioned columns to avoid corners as much as possible, blurring the distinction between structural columns and window frames.

However, due to unforeseen circumstances during construction, this roof could not take shape; we ultimately transformed it into an open platform. The columns were truncated at handrail height, and the widened handrail became an eave for the small building while also providing a small tabletop for those who lingered.

Platform and Skylights

The continuously changing shops left behind tangled pipes and obstructed drainage systems in Tianzifang; water would drip as people entered stores. Each shop would thus install its own awning or signage—new ones overlaid on old ones—making for an increasingly chaotic façade.

We began by removing these disorganised remnants of history, integrating all pipes, organising drainage systems, and providing a unified display interface for shop signage. A new platform was designed on one side of the brick-and-wood building that consolidated functions for piping drainage lighting and seating; structural columns echoed both original paving geometries and openings in building facades while providing shelter for those entering shops or lingering nearby. The platform also offered elevated views of Tianzifang.

To mitigate the impact of extending platforms on indoor lighting for shops, we added several skylights to the old building's roof. These skylights brought direct natural light into interiors during the daytime while serving as display windows illuminated by indoor lighting at night on the second-floor platform.

Red Bricks and Skirting Walls

The paving in the No. 7 Courtyard originated from artist renovations in the 1990s. Several diagonal lines disrupted the orderly architectural texture of factory workshops while organising an entire drainage system for the courtyard. We preserved this paving pattern while allowing red bricks to extend towards skirting walls.

On one side where foot traffic is denser, red bricks rise to a height of 1.2 meters; we hope this architectural language will resonate with subsequent bar setups in shops. Underneath the eaves created by platforms, widened red brick walls became seating against walls.

At the corner small building, red bricks serve as a base for stairs that widen and change direction from what was originally a cramped single-run staircase.

Indoors and Extensions

After completing the overall organisation of the courtyard, we designed SUR restaurant's interior. We aimed to extend this relatively small interior space into part of the courtyard. In handling wall treatments, we continued elements from exterior tiles into interiors; at a height of 1.2 meters, we integrated backrests for seating and bar counters. On upper portions of walls, we incorporated gradient mirror elements that allowed original concrete wall surfaces to gradually fade away while providing an infinite extension upwards towards ceilings.
