The Drifting Stones project is located in Nanchuan District, Chongqing. It is nestled amidst a landscape surrounded by the majestic wonders of nature: lush evergreen trees, towering vertical cliffs, gentle streams flowing through the valleys, and scattered boulders. As a scenic addition to the owner’s vacation retreat, the Drifting Stones project is situated in a secluded mountain valley within the estate. It comprises two standalone architectural elements: a stone staircase and a stone pavilion. Visitors can follow the stream and ascend the stone steps to enjoy the cool breeze and breathtaking views from the top, or step into the pavilion to enjoy a cup of tea while immersed in nature with the sound of water flowing underneath.

The Drifting Stones project was not originally a deliberate design commission but instead inspired by a serendipitous discovery of a massive rock during a site visit for other projects in the retreat. While large horizontally-veined granite boulders are common in the valley, this particular rock stands out for its placement, shape, and dramatic presence. Positioned in the heart of the valley, its flat top resembles a natural platform, evoking both the mystery of an extraterrestrial artifact and the ancient aura of a long-lost civilization. After several rounds of feasibility studies, we and the owner decided to create a resting space here. Since it was conceived from the our encounter with this stone, the project was aptly named “The Drifting Stones”.

The design of the Drifting Stones seeks to create an experience that appears to contrast with nature, using an immersive, ever-changing perspective to inspire and invite visitors to observe and connect with nature on a deeper level, and ultimately find a balance between humans, architecture, and nature. On one hand, we mimic natural elements and textures to blend the structure seamlessly with its surroundings. On the other hand, we introduce materials like steel, mirrored surfaces, and glass to make the architecture stand out with a supernatural, gravity-defying presence. This approach aims to create a sense of “extraordinary nature.”

“The Stacks” are composed of ten stacked slabs of rock. While the art of stone stacking holds different meanings in Eastern and Western cultures, it consistently showcases the same beauty of strength and balance, as well as the harmony between nature and human craftsmanship. Three stones are designed to begin from the stream’s edge, ascending along one side of the mountain wall to rest on the flat surface of the boulder. The remaining seven stones continue to stack upward, shifting horizontally along the edge of the boulder. The ninth slab reaches the rock face, while the tenth extends slightly outward in a gentle cantilever. With a height difference of approximately 60 centimeters between each slab, natural square-cut stones were sourced from a stone market to serve as steps, creating a walkable path across the top of the stone staircase. This design enables visitors to experience a rich sensory connection with the distant mountains, rock walls, valleys, streams, and forests as they move along the steps.

The gap between the cantilevered steps and the massive rock naturally forms an indoor reception space beneath the stone staircase. With the frameless tempered glass walls, we are able to preserve the surrounding panoramic landscape in the interior, so that visitors can immerse themselves in the wilderness while sheltered by the architecture. Some structural elements of the building are clad in mirrored surfaces, making them disappear and harmonized into the reflections of its own environment and accentuates the extraordinary sensation of the rock suspended overhead.

“The Hut”is situated on a hillside not far from the Stone Steps, connected by a pathway built with cobblestones and cement steps. The pavilion functions as a restroom, with the toilet area fully encased in mirrored surfaces, making it seemingly disappear into the surrounding evergreen foliage, while the approximately six-meter-long boulder that forms the roof “floats” among the forest and offers our visitors a surreal experience. The wash basin is located in the semi-outdoor space beneath the suspended stone. Drawing inspiration from the concept of “dripping water wears away stone,” the design incorporates a skylight that channels natural light onto the platform below, blending practical function with an appreciation of nature’s subtle persistence.

The construction the Drifting Stones adopted an artificial stone approach given the constrains by its site conditions. The design used a steel framework to shape the structure, with a heavy cement surface poured over it. Gound local stone powder was mixed into the cement exterior to harmonize the building with the surrounding rocks. We also invited Local artists to guide our workers in chiseling stone-like textures into the cement surface, echoing the patterns of the rock cliffs. Within the raw, rugged natural textures, modern elements like glass, mirrors, and metal were incorporated in the interior design. At the same time, deliberate contrasts and suspensions were introduced through thoughtful details—such as the raw stone handle on the glass door of the Stone Steps and the stainless steel handle on the stone door of the Stone Pavilion—adding layers of tension and dialogue between the natural and the modern.

Stone and mirror—one heavy, one light; one solid, one illusory; one rugged, one refined—together create a montage that balances the flow of nature with the stillness of the man-made within a limited space. The Drifting Stones project is an experiment in responding to nature through construction. Though modest in scale, it aspires to redefine its environment in a way that is both striking and harmonious. After the Drifting Stones was completed, the massive boulder still lies quietly, and the stream continues its gentle murmur. Yet, it is hoped that visitors, amidst the drifting clouds and tree shadows reflected in the mirrors, might catch a fleeting glimpse of inner tranquility.
