A corner of Xigang Dongguan Street holds half of Dalian's modern history.

Dongguan Street in Dalian can be traced back to the 1920s. According to the 'Xigang Historical and Cultural Information', there was a small earth mound called 'Xiao Gangzi' west of the Qingniwa Bridge in Dalian, on the northern section of Beijing Street. Dalian successively became a colony of Russia and Japan. Xiaogangzi developed into Dalian's "Chinese Commercial Street" and was later renamed Dongguanjie.

The buildings on Dongguan Street have their unique historical style influenced by history, predominantly featuring a blend of Japanese and European architecture. It is a microcosm of Dalian's century-long changes, a testament to the century-long struggle of the Dalian people, and an 'indelible nostalgia' in the hearts of old Dalian residents, possessing irreplicable architectural memories.

Historical Evolution

Historical architecture is the echo of the past transmitted into the future, a response from the present to the past.

This case is located at No. 24 Dongguan Street, Dalian, built in the 1920s, a historical protected building that has witnessed a century of changes in Dalian. Due to its special historical background, the building's appearance resembles a Japanese-style imitation of European architecture, the space adopts the traditional Chinese courtyard-style layout. The facade is adorned with granite lintels, red bricks, retro doors and windows, and European-style decorative carvings; the bright interior courtyard creates its unique architectural style, with every brick and tile telling the history of Dongguan Street, showcasing a century-old cultural relic.

A two-story brick and wood mixed-structure building, it belongs to a collective courtyard residence. Surrounding buildings enclose a courtyard space, with the courtyard structured as an external corridor, and the second floor features a ring of outdoor corridors leading to stairs that connect to the first-floor courtyard, making it a typical Dongguan Street building. The on-site survey found that the open courtyard had been renovated, with a glass roof added, transforming the open courtyard into an indoor atrium. Over the past century, due to the diverse changes in spatial functions and the lack of uniform organization, the space has presented a chaotic, disorderly, and dilapidated state.

Renovation Strategies

As a century-old cultural heritage building on Dongguan Street in Dalian, the primary challenge in its design lies in how to repair and update it under the strict and meticulous regulations of historical preservation, without damaging the original building's shape, structure, and the walls that showcase historical marks, achieve a harmonious blance between the ‘new’and the ‘old’,while restoring its past glory and vitality.

Respecting the old while integrating the new - 'Activating' the building

Follow the historical context and respect the style of ancient architecture. The atrium, as the core of the space, is not only visually bright and spacious, but also features a unique corridor structure that connects the overall space, with its facade made of old brick walls that are within the scope of historical building protection. The preserved wooden beam structure of the corridor is maintained, and the old brick walls are restored protectively, fully respecting the historical style while maximizing the preservation of historical relics and memories.

In the secondary reinforcement and renovation part of the building, 'active' utilization is emphasized, retaining the glass roof added later while using rustic and natural wooden finishes to cover the reinforced'new' walls, creating a contrast and collision between the old and new spaces, allowing the old building to produce new flavors.

Space Reshaping - Opening Up the Space

The overall first and second floors present a narrow strip shape enclosed on three sides, combined with a square atrium space, forming a simple spatial form.

By rearranging the spatial order, opening doorways, and connecting the originally three independent spaces, the spatial fluidity is enhanced, allowing each space to interact with the atrium, breaking the unfavorable conditions of a simple, narrow, and crowded layout across the first and second floors. At the same time, the good lighting of the atrium is utilized to softly introduce natural light into the indoor spaces of the first and second floors through the doorways. Visitors navigate through these boundary-defined spaces, experiencing a dark and immersive exhibition area on the first floor, while the second-floor reception area offers warmth and intimacy. Passing through the doorways, the line of sight opens up, creating a rich visual experience.

Utilizing the Gaps in Old Buildings: Embedding Historical Memory into Window Openings

The renovation of historic buildings is a rebirth that aligns with the spirit of the place, protecting and continuing the historical memories they represent.

Due to the elongated nature of architectural space, adding display racks inevitably makes the space feel more cramped and crowded. The hanging displays on both sides of the walls are too simplistic and cannot fully showcase the history of Dongguan Street. The natural arrangement of window openings in the building serves as an ideal exhibition platform. By utilizing the window openings of old buildings, we can incorporate the historical display function of Dongguan Street without damaging the original historical structure, creating a new exhibition space that enhances the rhythm of the exhibition. At the same time, the window openings, as part of the historic building, also reflect the history of Dongguan Street from a side perspective. The integration of these two elements complements each other, restoring and showcasing the historical landscape of Dongguan Street from different dimensions.

Mansion Immersion - Reproducing the Splendor of the Past

Due to the unique historical background of Dongguan Street, the red bricks, European-style carvings, and vintage doors and windows create its unique Japanese-style European architectural style. The indoor space extends its retro tone, using patterned wooden flooring, retaining rows of vintage window openings, wooden panel wall skirts, and retro ceilings with soft lighting, collectively creating an immersive mansion atmosphere that reproduces the former charm of Dongguan Street.
