Origin of the Project

County, Zhejiang Province, where the town transitions into rural settlements. Spanning 1.1 kilometers, Gushi Ancient Street boasts over 1,800 years of history, once thriving as a riverport commercial hub and now primarily residential. The local government plans to rejuvenate the area by introducing commercial activities over the next 3-5 years, aiming to attract tourism.

Xiajie Tea Plaza is located at the southeastern end of Gushi Ancient Street in Songyang

The plaza is rooted in the local legend of Xiajie Tea, originating from three Ye families who transformed their “two and a half” vegetable gardens into tea fields, marking the beginnings of large-scale tea cultivation in Songyang. Two century-old tea trees remain on-site, preserving this historical narrative and cultural legacy.

The site, elongated north to south and spanning both sides of a village road, was previously abandoned, with overgrown vegetable plots and makeshift storage sheds. To the north, it adjoins a community center repurposed from an ancestral hall, while the south transitions into dispersed homesteads and farmland. This setting reflects a gradual shift from the structured urban grid of the ancient street to the looser rural fabric.

As the first realized project in the revitalization of Gushi Ancient Street, Xiajie Tea Plaza centers on preserving the historic tea trees and celebrating local tea culture. Drawing on the “Two and a Half” narrative, the design employs spatial fragmentation and transition to seamlessly integrate the plaza into its urban-rural context, balancing structured order with natural informality. The intervention transforms a neglected site into a layered and vibrant public space that reconnects history with the present.

Dual Functions

Xiajie Tea Plaza is designed to address the dual needs of local residents and future visitors within a limited site area. In the short term, it provides shaded spaces, seating, and areas for children’s and seniors’ activities, filling the gap in community public space. It also serves as an extension of the nearby community center, accommodating large events and gatherings. In the long term, the plaza is envisioned as a key node in the revitalization of Gushi Ancient Street, offering visitors a window into the history of Gushi Town and the origins of Songyang’s tea culture.

The design prioritizes the integration of everyday life for residents with the experiential needs of visitors, combining functional and narrative elements. This dual-purpose public space breathes new life into the ancient street, supporting its sustainable future.

"Two and a Half" Plaza

The design concept of Xiajie Tea Plaza centers on the idea of "Two and a Half" as a series of floating plazas on a green landscape. The spatial composition includes the Entry Arch Plaza, the Central Activity Plaza, and the "Half" Tea Tree Plaza at the far end, creating a gradual transition from dynamic to tranquil spaces. The Entry Arch Plaza, located on either side of the village road, is adjacent to the community center at the end of the ancient street, serving as an open venue for large-scale events. A winding pathway weaves through the northern green space, connecting the community center to the plaza and providing a convenient link between the ancient street and the site. The northern green space retains a “rural” atmosphere, dotted with scattered landscape stones that offer diverse opportunities for rest and recreation, enriching the multifunctionality of the plaza.

The Central Activity Plaza incorporates a canopy, seating, and subtly undulating terrain, offering flexible spaces for daily activities and community gatherings. At the far end, the "Half" Circular Plaza is designed around two century-old tea trees, with a light-touch intervention that creates a serene viewing area.

The design not only references the historical narrative of the "Two and a Half" vegetable gardens but also employs the concept of "floating" as a transitional strategy. This approach carefully mediates the relationship between the site and the surrounding rural homesteads. Green buffers separate the plaza from adjacent properties, establishing a harmonious interface between public and private spaces.

Reinterpreting Collective Memory and Crafting a Narrative Flow

The design draws inspiration from local everyday elements found in the site and the adjacent ancient street, including vegetable sheds, stone steps, low walls, eaves, detachable doors, arches, and seating. These elements were reinterpreted into architectural structures and plaza furniture, reconstructing the collective memory of the site and forming a narrative-driven circulation path. Through the "heterogeneous" transformation of these elements, familiar forms and features are imbued with new functions and meanings. This approach enables users to navigate between the familiar and the unfamiliar, fostering fresh spatial experiences and deeper connections with the site.

The elongated site has limited visibility for visitors arriving from the turn of the ancient street. To address this, the design introduces two entry pavilions, inspired by traditional vegetable sheds, positioned on either side of the village road. These pavilions create a visual corridor that directs attention and movement toward the site’s interior. Framed views through the entry pavilions lead to a diagonal pathway meandering through vegetation, subtly guiding visitors toward the slightly offset Central Plaza. Within the plaza, a framing wall inspired by traditional archways further redirects sightlines, focusing attention on the two century-old tea trees at the far end of the site. This layered sequence of framed views and focal points draws visitors deeper into the plaza, culminating in a serene tea tree viewing area that connects them with the site’s rich historical and cultural legacy.

Reinterpretation in this project is not merely a reflection of history but an exploration of contemporary site usage. The entry pavilions, inspired by traditional vegetable sheds, evoke the site’s agrarian past while supporting diverse activities such as children’s play, grain drying, performances, and community meetings. The rotating stools in the Central Plaza reinterpret the informal seating habits of local residents. Their adjustable design accommodates various activities, including reading, chess, or casual conversations. Rotating framing walls provide multi-directional focal points, enhancing the viewing experience, while a canopy, composed of elements resembling eaves and doors, creates a human-scaled space for rest. Elements commonly found in the ancient street, such as steps and low walls, are reimagined into ramps and playful platforms, transforming them into spaces where children can explore and interact. By balancing historical memory with modern functionality, the design breathes new life into the site, creating a dynamic public space that bridges past and present.

Materials and Details

The material palette blends traditional vernacular and modern industrial elements, reflecting the coexistence of historical and contemporary craftsmanship. Local materials are reinterpreted for diverse applications and combined with modern techniques, with a focus on durability and sustainability.

The ground features polished concrete paired with rubble stone walls, both utilizing the same aggregate for visual cohesion. Circular joint patterns hint at the rotational functionality of seating and framing walls, while linear drainage grooves add rhythm to the surface. At the terminal plaza, gravel paving and stone slab stepping paths ensure permeability around the tea trees while maintaining a respectful buffer zone.

Exposed steel structures are finished with green fluorocarbon coatings, complementing the surrounding vegetation and reinforcing a fresh, cohesive aesthetic. Bluestone serves dual purposes as stepping stones and carved inlays in the pavement, also functioning as bench surfaces. Clay tiles are used along pathways and as cladding for rotating stools, adding layers of texture. Bamboo is employed for weather-resistant wall panels and canopy accents, emphasizing the site’s natural and local character.

Reconstructing Spatial Memory and Interpreting the Spirit of Place

One can say that the city itself is the collective memory of its people, and like memory it is associated with objects and places. The city is the locus of the collective memory.”

As Aldo Rossi stated, “One can say that the city itself is the collective memory of its people, and like memory it is associated with objects and places. The city is the locus of the collective memory.” Xiajie Tea Plaza reinterprets the site’s historical context and dual-purpose needs by reshaping its spatial structure and translating collective memory.

The design fuses past and present into a narrative-driven public space with a strong sense of place. By embodying a vibrant, site-specific identity, it becomes a key node in the revitalization of Gushi Ancient Street, breathing new life and meaning into its historical legacy.
